Quote of the Day: “When the heart weeps for what it has lost the spirit laughs for what it has found.” Chinese Proverb
My sister, Lynne, is very sick and it breaks my heart. She came down to Salt Lake for Mike and Elle’s Wedding and then was too weak to come to either the Groom’s Dinner or reception. She is such a fighter and if you could have seen her a week ago at her son, Matt’s wedding you would not have known she was ill. She has always been a lover of life. Growing up, she was never afraid of anything. She would jump from the highest diving board, stand up for what she believed in and in tennis, nothing made her nervous- she could always execute the shot. She was the perfect partner because she helped me believe in myself. Smart and athletic, she never came off as braggy or boastful and really I can’t remember a time when she was mean. She was always very loving to me. Of course, we did have our times when we fought over clothes but she was always protective of me as her younger sister.
Lynne had a harder time in her teen-age years than me. Perhaps because of her adventurous spirit or maybe being older when our parent’s divorced, life just seemed hard sometimes- questioning where you fit in , trying to navigate those years with the best judgment you could. Lynne looked to our older sister, Heidi, for advice which wasn’t always the best place to get it. But fortunately, Lynne also had this great group of friends, starting all the way back in junior high, that she is still very close to.
A few years ago, we roomed together on our Mediterranean Cruise and I’m so glad that I got that time with Lynne. I remember us walking up the steep steps to enter the city of Santorini in Greece. A lot of people ride on donkeys but we wanted to walk. We did all the activities on the ship winning most of them- table-tennis, golfing, rock-climbing, paddle-ball. It was great to have a sister who was always willing to do the fun stuff.
Lynne has always been a great example to me. She is a fighter and I have never seen anyone want to win this battle with cancer more than she has. I have watched her confront every obstacle that was laid in her path and to see her not even be able to get off the couch- it’s just too much.
