Quote of the Day: “No pain that we suffer, no trial that we experience is wasted. All that we suffer and all that we endure builds our characters, purifies our hearts, expands our souls, and makes us more tender and charitable. It is through sorrow and suffering, toil and tribulation, that we gain the education that we came here to acquire.” Orson F. Whitney
Exercise Log: Last day along the river. I went 5.44 miles (-2.05) I got up early, had a little breakfast and went out on the river. I love the walk and will really miss the beautiful sounds of the birds and greenery of the river. It is amazing to me that this place exists within a busy, noisy city. It is a sanctuary. I am drawn to it. At night, you can hear the noisy mechanical hum of the city, even with all the windows closed. It is not a soothing sound. I much prefer nature outside my windows. Sirens and cars are heard all night long but then when you get down to the river, all those human sounds are somehow muffled by the trees and river and your soul can be fed.
So my hands and feet are on the mend. My sister, Jen found information on the internet about Hand-foot syndrome which is a side-effect of chemo. Luckily, I have finished that medicine with my last treatment so I think they will get better. I think it was a good week for me to have been out of town since I wasn’t gardening or washing dishes to irritate them. With the next 4 meds some of the side effects can be numbing of the fingers and toes. Something to look forward to!
When we got home last night, I had a report from the Utah Department of Health. I had called them when I was so alarmed about all the breast cancer I was aware of in my area. I was glad that they got back to me. They ran an analysis of rates of breast and prostate cancer for the 35 year period of 1973-2007. An interesting thing about the study area- it included the area I grew up in a few miles away in Holladay, basically I have lived in this area most of my life. They found two 5 year periods that the incidence of breast cancer was elevated (1983-1987 and 1993-1997). But since those rates didn’t stay elevated they call it a statistical fluctuation. Basically, they said that the area does not have cancer clusters and that elevations are normal findings. After I tested positive for the BRCA 1 gene and found out that my cancer is caused by genetic reasons, I haven’t worried about the soil or pollutants in my area. Let’s face it, there are so many pollutants in our environment and sprays on our foods!
Last day walking the river. Boats are usually packed and take people on tours.
