Quote of the Day: “There is no education in the second kick of a mule.”
So yesterday, an acquaintance at church asked me how I was feeling and I said “Great”. Then he replies “No really, how are you?” So I’m looking at him wondering what he means and then he says “Oh, I’ll ask Joe later.” As if Joe, will give him the real scoop and I am lying about how I’m feeling. Remind me never to do that to anyone. Truth is, I feel really good but of course any pain anywhere gives me rise to fear, but I feel very healthy. I have been drinking tons of green tea, organic of course, and chia seeds and lots of cruciferous vegetables- mainly broccoli and cauliflower and still no sweets! I know when I’ve been asked about how my cancer was discovered, people want to know if I hurt somewhere or had some indication that something was wrong, but it really wasn’t so. I felt great. The only time I have been in discomfort, and sometimes a lot of it, was due to chemo, radiation, surgery or recovery from surgery. I think that’s why cancer is so scary- it can live for years in your body before you have an symptoms.
We were talking about dealing with trials at church, and one person posed the question: “How do you deal with life when real adversity strikes?” He was wondering what he would do and I think we all have wondered that. I can say with a bit of experience, that we are all capable of coping with more than we think we can and sometimes it just involves calming ourselves so that we stop worrying about issues that we have no control over, or focusing on what is really important in life. Nothing like a tragedy to get one to cling to the most important aspects of life; family, friends and faith and being grateful for the positives in your life. Recently, I’ve thought how nice it would be to have my only worries be regarding the score of my tennis match or perhaps which shoes to buy. Right now, my mind is consumed with other concerns. There’s a time and a season, I keep telling myself. Life won’t always be this dramatic and this complicated.
Here are some great foods to eat from the Dr. Oz show:
Dr. Oz says it over and over again: the foods you eat have incredible power to heal – or harm – your body. Below are the top superfoods that have been shown to protect you from breast cancer. Incorporate them as much as you can into your daily diet.
- Green tea 3 cups of green tea a day can prevent breast cancer by as much as 50% because of its high EGCG antioxidant content. Squeeze a little lemon into your cup and increase the antioxidant power 10 times.
- Garlic A good immunity booster that also has anti-inflammatory properties.
- Olive oil This monounsaturated fat can help suppress tumor activity.
- Tumeric This spice known for its beautiful orange color also helps decrease estrogen. As little as 1 teaspoon a day has been shown to reduce tumor growth. Get your daily dose by mixing it into salad dressings, rice or vegetable dishes.
- Cruciferous vegetables Leafy greens like kale, bok choy and Swiss chard bind estrogen in your GI tract and reduce tumor stimulation. They also detoxify the liver, so you don’t have toxins flowing through your body that can irritate cells and turn them into early cancers.
- Seaweed High in iodine, this is another estrogen reducer
