Quote of the Day:  “Joy is not in things, it is in us.”  Richard Wagner

This has been a great exercise week for me.  I finished Saturday having logged 22.63 miles, most of which were running in the great out doors.  Yesterday, Sue O. and I left a car so we could run a lot of down hill to our destination, which was 6.5 miles away.  The best part- I ran most of it feeling great.  Oh, now I remember what draws me to getting up in the dark and cold, it’s those endorphins.  I also revisited this sensation- that you can’t wait to try running the next day to see what your body can do.  I know that seems weird but it’s true.  I remember being excited thinking about tomorrow’s run, to see how far and fast this body would take me. I actually felt that this week. It also has this great effect on you- makes you want to eat healthy and go to bed early.  I can almost say “I’m a runner!”

I love the quote of the day because it is so true.  If you look around, it’s not the people who have the most money or possessions that are the happiest, it’s the people who put their energies into their passions or great projects that benefit other people or better yet into helping others live a better life. They are the ones who are happy, fulfilled and compassionate and, in turn, have joy.  You can’t buy joy no matter how hard you try.  Yesterday, Alex, Joe and I went to see the movie, The Artist, -time well spent.  It was like being immersed in an earlier era, it’s an incredibly artistic movie but the facial and body nuances of the actors were amazing.  It’s a study in how people really feel by just looking at their expressions and body language and the dog, oh my, so adorable!  The audience heartily clapped at the end.

We saw the movie at the Broadway, which is a venue for more artistic, less popular Hollywood type movies.  Also, it is a showing site for the Sundance Film Festival.  So we come out of the theatre and people were lined up for Sundance films and the air was thick with haughtiness and privilege.  It’s amazing to me that haughtiness can be felt, but it can.  It’s as if they are saying “Please get out of my way but, whatever you do, don’t brush my mink,(any fur), coat as you pass by.”   What is it about human nature that we insist on feeling superior to another?  It’s not healthy for anyone!

My favorite part of Saturday was watching the Australian Open Women’s Finals because as we were watching, Maggie, our little 4 year old granddaughter, who came to stay the day with us, asked who we wanted to win- “the girl in the white dress or the girl in the blue shirt?”  I said that I was pulling for Azaranka (in blue) but really that I liked both girls.   After Azaranka won, they showed Sharapova looking downtrodden and Maggie said:  “Next time, let’s let the other girl win.”  We laughed that Maggie thought we had some control over the match but I absolutely loved that she saw the sorrow in Sharapova and had a solution for it.

Miss Maggie
